Blind Artist Vision: blog by Stella De Genova
It’s spring. It’s getting warmer. As I talked about previously, this is when I’m full of energy and get “inspired.” I’ve got lots of new ideas for paintings, gardening, and freshening up my home. But as much as I try to ignore it, I am blind and if that in itself doesn’t remind me to slow down, karma steps in and does it for me.
As careful as we try to be, blind and visually impaired people do have mishaps. We trip over things, stumble and bump and run into things. Black and blue marks, bumps and bruises and occasional fractures are not unheard of. This is not a cry for sympathy – it’s just a fact of life for someone who can’t always see what’s in front of or around them.
So to make this more personal, I took a fall down my stairs 2 weeks ago! It was quite scary but in my shock, I did a mental body check and all seemed well except for my shoulder. I could move it a little but was in great pain. After x-rays, it was confirmed that nothing was broken, just badly bruised. It has taken some time for it to heal and it’s not perfect yet but definitely on the mend. I am so thankful to whichever angels were looking out for me.
Of course, this was my left shoulder and I am left-handed so I couldn’t do artwork, cook, watch grandkids, or do house chores (can’t complain about the house chores!) I do always try to find some good in any situation, so I think it gave me some time to reset. I was forced to take a little time to think, which some days, I feel so busy that I don’t even have time to do.

Even though I am still achy, I try not to let things keep me down for long so I’m getting back into the swing of things. I did finish a painting, By the Sea, and am now beginning a painting that a friend asked me to do of a windmill on Mykonos Island in Greece. I’m also cooking again and hanging out with the grandkids.
And one of my favorite things to do in spring is getting new plants and flowers for outside. John and I went shopping yesterday and today I started planting and filling pots. I got to play with the flowers and John and one of our grandsons got to do the heavy lifting. Next week, we’ll get the vegetable plants for the garden.

I have so many new ideas for my art, my home, and garden -- I just need my healing shoulder to catch up. Patience is not my virtue but I am learning.
Love this and the flower painting is so beautiful!! Sorry about your shoulder and glad you are on the mend. I'm a little laid up myself right now and it was good to read your blog and enjoy the slow moments
