Colors

Blind Artist Vision: blog by Stella De Genova

The cycle of life is coming to its annual end but it doesn’t go quietly.  Each year we await the explosive burst of colors that will be all around us.  For those of us who live in areas that experience the four seasons, the colors are exhilarating.  Before the long sleep of winter, we get to enjoy the grand finale of fiery hues.  You may look forward to the one tree or bush in front of your house or backyard or a drive into the countryside to view the luxurious array of colored foliage, but whatever it may be, there is a mix of renewed energy and reflection.

We look forward to the spring thaw and the renewal of life.  And we look forward to the rising temperatures of summer with sunny days and warm nights.  But by the time October has arrived, we begin to want relief from the heat.  The leaves change colors and fall and we take a moment to appreciate this earth before the hectic holidays and cold, snowy winter sets in.

It’s been about 5 years since I could see the changing colors of the leaves.  Colors were already fading for me before that but bright crimsons and burnt oranges still popped on the turquoise sky.  Now, when we go for a drive, almost everything (except the bright blue sky) looks like a black and white movie to me.  But I don’t despair, the mix of warm sunshine along with the chill in the air is refreshing.  And, of course, I love the crunch under my feet of the dry, fallen leaves.

The cooler temperatures can also bring a renewed energy.  Now it’s time for turning on the oven, and I’ve already made banana bread and some pumpkin spice shortbread cookies.

When a person lacks in one of the senses, their mind learns to lean on all of the other senses and in doing so, can still enjoy the full picture of their surroundings.  In autumn, the feel, the sounds and the aromas that surround us are comforting.

As this post shows, I have painted autumn scenes and I’ve even made an attempt to write a haiku poem:

Autumn in the air

Leaves dance on the whirling winds

Colors, crunch, crisp chill

And what I reflect on is the fact that even as my vision diminishes, my creativity does not.  Family, love and work are important in our lives but none of that is possible without peace of mind.  For many of us, creativity is the path to peace and joy.  It is so worth the process!

Your words are so descriptive and beautiful. I can see with mind more than my eyes when I look at the world through your words.
